MANZIN – Residents of Salukazi were baffled after learning that an elderly man was ‘necklaced’ to death in a suspected case of vigilante justice.

The body of Nicholus Simelane (60) of the same area in Maliyaduma, was found by a search party in a thick bush yesterday morning after he went missing on Sunday.

The man’s upper body was burnt beyond recognition and on the scene, sources alleged that there was a tyre that was suspected to have been used to burn him.
According to sources close to the matter, the elderly man had left his home on Sunday morning for a meeting that was held at the umphakatsi.

Imbibed

Simelane was said to have left the umphakatsi premises after the meeting just like everyone else. The unsuspecting senior citizens is then said to have visited a drinking spot around the area where he imbibed until late in the evening.

Thereafter, a source privy to the details of the matter said information gathered after his disappearance was that when he left the drinking hole, some residents followed him.
Worth noting was that these residents were known to have allegedly publicly threatened Simelane after they suspected him of wrongdoing that cannot be mentioned due to its sensitivity.

Further, the source alleged that the body of the elderly man appeared to have gaping wounds that were suspected to be a result of severe assault.

Before the discovery of his body, information was to the effect that when his family realised that he did not return on Sunday evening, they made efforts to at least get hold of him through his mobile phone.

On the night, they discovered that Simelane’s phone was off but when his children allegedly persisted calling, the phone was answered on Monday morning.

With the notion that Simelane was the one on the other end of the line, the caller allegedly asked where he was and the response by the call receiver was that he was stuck in a stream.

“Since there are a lot of streams here, when the receiver was asked to be specific, he hung up,” said a reliable source.
After this phone call, one of Simelane’s children; the one who called, is said to have mentioned that the voice on the other end of the line was not his father’s.

More worried than before, the children tried calling their father’s phone again, only to find that it had been switched off again. The seriousness of the matter was felt by residents, especially those who were approached by police officers about it.  The police were said to have worked around the clock to locate Simelane, so much that some residents were engaged at around 2am yesterday.
