MBABANE – Suspended Mbabane Municipal Councillor Sikhatsi Dlamini has earned a nomination for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for Mbabane East Constituency.

The former Manzini Wanderers player is serving a two-month suspension imposed by the council Mayor Zephaniah Nkambule, but the people of Fonteyn still believe in the man. He will be up against gospel artist Vusi Shiba whose popularity during yesterday’s nominations held at Fonteyn High School could not be ignored. The duo headline the list of the eight nominated candidates for the position, where the winner will face the winner of Msunduza Chiefdom that has, among others, former Sihlangu Coach Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga, Esther Dlamini and Vusi Sibisi. The event at Fonteyn was without any drama, as voters appeared determined to do the business of the day timely and by 1:30pm the proceedings had been completed.

The rest of the nominees are; Harry Shiba, his brother Andreas Dlamini, Sandile Mavuso, Ferdinand Mabel, Nomvuyo Mncina of Eswatini TV and Sigcineni Primary School teacher Phumzile Gama. With all due respect to the rest of the nominees, the feeling on the ground pointed to a possible two-horse race between the Ward Five councillor and the gospel artist. Dlamini, in a brief interview after the nomination said he was excited at the responsibility bestowed on him by the community of his chiefdom. He said he was not afraid of competition and that he was used to it. “I wish to thank the community for trusting me to do the job for them. “we are now all looking forward to the primary elections,” he said. Shiba did not deviate much from what his competitor said about the nomination, also taking time to thank the people of Fonteyn for choosing him to be their candidate.

“A nomination shows that people recognise your contribution to the community. This would surely invigorate me to work even harder to serve the community. I am looking forward to the election day and wish the rest of the nominees a fruitful exercise,” Dlamini said.
The nomination process attracted about 200 community members who participated fully in every step of the event. Meanwhile, there were only four candidates for the position of Indvuna Yenkhundla, where the male/female ratio was an impressive 50:50 with two men and women competing. Fonteyn Chairman Percy Roger will contest the position of Bucopho alongside 11 others, who included United Pentecostal Pastor Augustine and Sizwe Masilela of Divine of All Nations Ministries. The nominated candidates will have to undergo a police vetting which will determine if their candidature would stay. The process includes determining if they have no criminal records that could forbid them from contesting the elections.
