1 579 WOMEN VS 4 907 MEN
MBABANE – The ‘Vote for Women Campaign’ will be given a run for its money as only 1 579 women have been nominated against 4 907 men.
This is according to the preliminary nomination statistics results released by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) yesterday.
In total, 6 486 nominees are expected to stand for the country’s national elections and the winners will fill the positions of Bucopho, Indvuna Yenkhundla and Members of Parliament (MPs).
Out of this number, 59 MPs and 50 Tinvuna Tetinkhundla will be elected and about 335 Bucopho from the various chiefdoms.
Despite the fact that a majority of the registered electorate were female, the early figures show that men had an urge during the nominations.
The highest number of female nominees was recorded under the Manzini Region, where 482 women were nominated for political positions for the elections which are expected to take place next month. As encouraging as the 482 Manzini figure is, however, the region also recorded the highest in the male figures where 1 756 are expected to stand for the various positions.
The least number of women were recorded in the Lubombo Region, where a total of 273 women would be expected to stand. In contrast, a staggering 907 males were nominated in the Lubombo Region.
In percentage form, this means that the total number of males stands at 80.4 per cent as opposed to only 19.6 per cent female candidates.
This shows a difference of 60.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, around 23.1 per cent (273) of female nominees will compete against 76.9 per cent (907) of males in the Lubombo Region for political positions in the national elections. According to statistics released by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) yesterday, the nominees were nominated from 11 constituencies and 55 royal kraals.
The statistics showed that most females (133) were nominated under the Bucopho category, while the least (65) were nominated to be Members of Parliament (MPs). Only 75 females were nominated for the position of indvuna yenkhundla in the whole region.
The figures indicate that even in men, the highest number of nominees (419) was in the Bucopho category, while Indvuna Yenkhundla and MP had 265 and 223 nominees, respectively.
Out of the 55 royal kraals, only five showed that they had more confidence in women than they did in men. They showed this by nominating more women than men in different categories. These were Malindza, Sigcaweni West, Tsambokhulu, Sigcaweni East and Nceka.
The electorate in Malindza nominated 12 females for Bucopho against eight males. Sigcaweni West resident nominated three females and two males for the MP position, while Tsambokhulu nominated three females and one male for both Indvuna Yenkhundla and MP positions.
The Sigcaweni East electorate also nominated three females and one male for the position of Indvuna Yenkhudla, while Nceka residents nominated two females and one male for the same category.
