MANZINI – Police were called as an aspiring Mkhulamini chiefdom politician was reported for allegedly dishing out food parcels to community members.

The incident, which almost spoilt the jovial mood of over 100 community members from Vusweni in Mkhulamini under Kukhanyeni Inkhundla, took place on Sunday afternoon.

A well-placed source within the community alleged that the candidate, whose name is known to this publication but will not be mentioned because he has not been charged with any wrongdoing, allegedly distributed the food parcels to community members through his campaign managers (bogalajane).
The source alleged that the community members were gathered at a place called indlunkhulu (headquarters) when the aspiring candidate and his campaign managers arrived.

Thereafter, the source said the candidate introduced himself to the community members and briefly explained who he was and made mention of the fact that he had been nominated for one of the political positions.

According to the source, the candidate is said to have informed the community members that he was busy looking for sponsors who would build a school in the community. “He said today (on Sunday), he was pleased to inform the community that he had come with a representative from one of the sponsors who will construct a school in the area,” the source alleged.

The representative is said to have made a brief presentation to the gathering. After the presentation, the candidate left the place.
“His campaign managers then dished out the food parcels, which mostly included rice, which was packed in plastic bags, and loaves of bread. The packages also included soup, tea bags and sweets,” the source alleged.

He said just before the distribution was over, a police van with armed officers from Manzini Police Station arrived. He said the officers did not disturb the food distribution process as they only recorded statements with some of the campaign managers who were dishing out the food parcels.

The area’s umgijimi, Nduku Maseko, confirmed that the aspiring bucopho arrived at the umphakatsi on Sunday, around 3:40pm with his delegation.
Maseko corroborated the information from sources.
He said the delegation then started distributing the food to the community. When sought for comment, the aspiring politician confirmed that he visited Vusweni and that he was chairman of a project of the school which was to be constructed in the area.
