MANZINI – Are love relationships between younger men and older women toxic?

This question has come to the fore after four cases of alleged assault between younger men and older women were heard at the Manzini Magistrates Court yesterday. Court reports and the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) have confirmed that abuse cases between these two groups were on the rise. It was gathered that the magistrates court in the region received over 10 cases of physical abuse between the two parties in a month. Most of these abuse cases are normally perpetuated by the younger men against the older women due to alleged cheating and lack of respect, among other reasons. Some magistrates have previously advised older women who were victims of physical abuse at the hands of their young lovers, normally referred to as ‘Ben 10s’, to refrain from such relationships as most were toxic.

Yesterday, at least four ‘young’ accused persons made court appearances before different magistrates after they were arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting their older partners in separate incidents. The first incident occurred in Fairview at a popular guest house where the man, Phumlani Dladla (28) allegedly assaulted his lover, Thembi Vilane (45) with a beer bottle by stabbing her near the eye and all over the body. The suspect appeared before Senior Magistrate Phathaphatha Mdluli.  It was gathered from statements submitted in court that the suspect headed to the guest house where his lover was on the night and allegedly found her chatting with another man. “When he saw me speaking to the man, whom I knew on a personally, he got infuriated. The man had been drinking some beer and carrying two bottles, which my boyfriend took, broke and stabbed me with in the eye and all over the body,” Vilane alleged in court. The accused is alleged to have escaped after committing the offence, leaving the woman lying in a pool of blood.

Her other companion, who is a university student abroad, contacted the police who arrived at the scene and rushed her to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital where she was admitted. The suspect was eventually arrested and the police discovered that he had another case of malicious injury to property, where he broke the door at his former girlfriend’s house, after he suspected that she was with another man inside. The case continues before Magistrate Mdluli.

Charge

Meanwhile, a kombi driver, Zwelisha Gwebu (32), who is said to be in a love relationship with Fikile Kunene (48), made a court appearance yesterday before Magistrate Philisiwe Simelane, facing a charge of assault. In this case, it was alleged in court that while playing a game of cards, Fikile allegedly insulted her lover, which infuriated him. “We always insult each other during the course of the game, especially when the other loses. “However, on the day of the incident, when I did so, he became angry and started assaulting me with every object he came across. He severely assaulted me with fists and kicks and with an ironing board. “I screamed for help and was later taken to the RFM Hospital where I was admitted. He sometimes beats me up,” Fikile alleged.
The third case to be heard was that of Madoda Simelane (20), who is in a relationship with Ncamisile Dlamini (32). He made a court appearance at the Matsapha Circuit Court, where he declared his undying love for Ncamisile but explained that he felt disrespected sometimes and said he suspected it was because of the age gap.
