MATSETSA – Shocking! Unbelievable!

These words best describe Nthethelelo Magongo’s stunning victory over Joseph Souza in the final round of the elections. Magongo (59), a businessman and football team owner, defeated Souza with only a difference of 13 votes to win the race to Parliament. As such, he is the new Lugongolweni Member of Parliament after losing twice to Souza in the last two elections (2008 and 2013). Magongo amassed a total of 2 720 with Souza getting only 2 703 votes. As soon as the official results were pronounced at around 8:30am yesterday, Magongo’s supporters chanted and danced at the entrance of the counting centre. “Simbulele Van damme,” one supporter was overheard shouting.

Others celebrated by spinning the vehicles while others ran around displaying overwhelming feelings of joy and excitement. It must be mentioned that Souza was defeated by a ‘united front’ formed by the losers of the Primary Elections. Supporters of the candidates who lost to Souza in the Primary Elections were seen celebrating and chanting anti-Souza slogans as news spread that the veteran politician had lost. And some of the losing candidates joined the party, celebrating Souza’s shocking defeat. Souza’s long-time political foe and former Lugongolweni legislator, Wiseman Ntjingila was seen dancing and clinching his fist in celebration.

From the counting centre at Matsetsa, Magongo was whisked away by family members but he did make a stop to speak to his supporters at Lukhula junction. Upon arriving at his home area, Mzilikazi, he was mobbed by hundreds of supporters who had descended next to the main road to welcome him. “I want to thank all those who were working on this campaign. A lot of people were campaigning for me even those I do not know,” said Magongo, who owns Sikhalo seAfrica, a football team that was campaigning in the National First Divison last season. From Mzilikazi, Magongo’s supporters also filled the streets of Siteki, celebrating his stunning victory. They marched along the main Jacaranda Street and at the bus rank.
