‘SENGIYAHAMBA’, SAYS DYING BOY AFTER ASSAULT BY UNCLE
NGCAYINI – A teenage boy died after he was allegedly assaulted by his uncle with fists, kicks and open hands last week.
The deceased Sibusiso Simelane (17) was staying with his uncle, Mduduzi Khweshu Dlamini (35) of Ngcayini.
The uncle is a construction worker.
“He took him in after his mother abandoned him. The boy’s mother is now late. However, before she died she had abandoned the child at a place situated in Lavumisa. Through some of his mother’s friends, we managed to locate his whereabouts and he was eventually brought home by his uncle, the same man alleged to have killed him,” the boy’s other uncle, Boy Dlamini, said yesterday.
Boy revealed that as a family, they were not aware of any physical or other form of abuse as the suspect had his own house, situated a kilometre away from the main Dlamini homestead.
He said the two lived together and there was no suspected abuse until Simelane’s death last Wednesday.
“Since he was in the construction industry, he would take his nephew to sites when schools were closed or during school holidays and we would not see them at all. They would also go together to work in the maize fields from early in the morning until late. He instilled some sort of discipline, however we all assumed it was part of a grooming process so he could be a better person,” Boy added.
A day before Simelane’s demise, Boy revealed that a resident of the area came running and knocked on his door, shouting, “Inyandzaleyo, Sibusiso uyafa lapha” - loosely translated, “Please help, Sibusiso is dying over there,” pointing at the accused person’s house. Boy said when he rushed to Mduduzi’s home, together with his wife, they found the suspect pacing up and down the veranda, looking frustrated and confused.
He said when he got inside the house, Simelane, who had missed school, was rolling on the floor and complaining of a severe stomach ache. Boy said when he asked him what was wrong, Simelane allegedly told them he had inyongo (bile) and he was vomiting.
