MANZINI – Once again, money which was in the hands of the police has gone missing and this time around it belonged to a business owned by one of the Cabinet ministers.

According to an impeccable source, a total of E65 000 belonging to Mankayane Buy Cash Hardware, a business owned by Minister of Agriculture Jabulani ‘Buy Cash’ Mabuza, was kept at Mankayane Police Station and has since been reported missing.
The minister said he had no idea about the missing money but confirmed that some of his businesses were keeping money at various police stations for safety reasons. However, he said he could not confirm if the missing money belonged to his business or not because he had not yet received any report. He then referred this publication to the store manager.

On the other hand, Mankayane Buy Cash Hardware Manager, Senzo Nhlabatsi, confirmed the incident and said he was still busy at the police station over the matter. He said at the moment, police had no idea how the E65 000 was stolen but mentioned that the law enforcers said internal investigations were ongoing.

The reliable source revealed to this publication that on a daily basis, police escort money from the minister’s hardware store.
He said the missing E65 000, which was kept in a cash box, was brought to the police station on Tuesday and locked in the armoury room. He added that on Wednesday and Thursday, two more cash boxes were brought in with different amounts, which could not be ascertained.

“The cash box that is missing is the one which was brought in on Tuesday and it had E65 000,” the source said.
Furthermore, the source alleged that apart from the money and weapons, the same armoury room also stored external examination papers which were dispatched every day when pupils were writing.

Keys

The source said this gave a number of officers access to the keys to the armoury room.
He said the money was discovered to be missing on Friday when the personnel from the store wanted to deposit the money at the bank. On that note, another source revealed that the ongoing police investigations have uncovered that last week, the keys to the armoury room were once allegedly kept by a junior officer who was on a night shift.

After the shocking discovery, the source said the police responded by sending senior officers from both Organised Crime Unit (Tingculungculu) and Serious Crimes Unit (Lukhozi) departments to investigate the matter.
“During the investigations, a number of officers were interviewed one on one by the senior crime investigators,” the source said.
