LOBAMBA – Oops! No Bible for swearing-in ceremony. The swearing-in of the newly elected women Members of Parliament (MP) had to be delayed for over 10 minutes as there was no Bible to be used for the ceremony.

Attorney General Sifiso Mashampu Khumalo had not brought along his Bible, neither had the MP-elects.
Clerk to Parliament Ndvuna Dlamini came to the rescue and lent the AG his Bible.

He had to make a quick dash to his office to fetch his Bible, which then marked the start of the ceremony.
First to be called upon was the Lubombo MP-elect Lorraine Nxumalo, followed by MP Nokuthula Dlamini (Shiselweni), MP Nokunceda Bujela ( Lubombo) and MP Busisiwe Mavimbela (Manzini).

Following the swearing-in ceremony, they were welcomed by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Petros Mavimbela, who implored the members of the House to work with the women MPs. Mavimbela said they should not bully the MPs because they were not yet familiar with the proceedings in Parliament. In vernacular, he said: ‘Ningabajubi umsila.’

The House was also given a chance to welcome the four elected women MPs. Ndzingeni MP Lutfo Dlamini said they had recorded history in the country to become the first to be elected by parliamentarians as per the

Election of Women members to the House of Assembly Act, 2018.
Dlamini then advised the women legislators to work with other MPs and do not think of settling scores with their competitors who beat them during elections.

tragedy

He said it would be a tragedy if such could happen, adding that the constituents should be respected at all times. Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala commended the women MP-elects for having come this far. The Sigwe MP also reminded them to stick to what they had promised during their submissions to improve the country’s ailing economy.
Manzini South MP Thandi Nxumalo lauded the women legislators, adding that it was great to have managed to come this far following the difficult elections.
