MANZINI – A lot will be at stake as PSAs have resolved to engage a combat gear in demanding 14.4 per cent COLA for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years.

Three of the four unions forming part of the public sector associations (PSAs); SNAT, NAPSAWU and SNAGAP revealed their plan during a press conference which was held at the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) Centre yesterday.

The union leaders said this morning they would serve government with new notices of a joint strike action to start on January 28, 2019.
They said the duration of the strike action would be determined by government as they would not go back to work until they got the 14.5 per cent cost of living adjustment (CoLA).

According to a press statement which the unions released after the press conference, they were disappointed with the manner in which government was treating its workers.

They said it was common cause that as government employees, they had, just like all other workers in the country, been hit by inflation in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years.
“As such, we deserve a reimbursement of this erosion that happened on our salaries,” reads part of the statement.

Their argument was that the money they were demanding from government was not a salary increment but an amount which the employer owed them due to inflation rates of 2018/18 and 2018/19 financial years.
They said it was, however, saddening to note that their calls on having their salaries adjusted had fallen on deaf ears.
