PIGG’S PEAK – Instead of preventing violence, two police officers engaged in a fight during a protest march.

Constables Busta Vilakati and Prince Dlamini scuffled up during a protest in which ratepayers and residents had approached the civic centre to deliver a petition over grievances they have.

Vilakati was clad in a T-shirt with the words, ‘If provoked, we strike’ while Dlamini wore one with the word ‘Bose’ inscribed on it.
The fight between the two started when the residents arrived at the civic centre to hand over the written petition.

Proceed

Several police officers had been guiding the crowd but upon arrival, security personnel manning the civic centre requested that they should not proceed beyond a certain point.
It was then that the marchers questioned why the security guards were interfering.

Vilakati was one of the marchers while Dlamini was seen standing with some of the security guards.
It was during this time that the two police officers then engaged in a exchange of unpalatable words.
The two hurled insults at each other before they started manhandling one another.

Police officers, as well as some of the residents, intervened and tried to stop the fight but even after separating them, the officers continued in the scuffle, resulting in a commotion which lasted about five minutes.
The marchers then continued with chanting before the petition was presented to the mayor Victor Rodrigues, who is also a businessman.
Both Vilakati and Dlamini were later reached for comment after the protest march regarding their fight.

Blocked

Vilakati said the fight had been started when the security guards blocked the marchers but that Dlamini also interfered.
Dlamini said the scuffle started when Vilakati interfered with security guards who had been tasked to control the crowd.
Meanwhile, the aggrieved residents and ratepayers have passed a vote of no confidence on the town’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mzwandile Ndzinisa.
This was contained in the petition they delivered yesterday after a march which started off from the police station to the civic centre.
