SITHOBELWENI – A member of the Jericho Zionist Church was left paralysed after he slammed his head against his church door while possessed by the spirit.

As a result, Vusi Mndvoti (30) has spent the past eight years of his life confined to his sick bed at the Sithobelweni Health Centre, where health personnel are said to be monitoring his condition.

The devoted Zionist got paralysed during a night prayer service, which was hosted by his church around KaNkonjwa, which is situated about 30km to the south of Sithobelweni.

This was after the congregation was invited by their leader to perform the famous wheel dance (siguco), which was popularised by this particular sect of African Christian churches. The dance has spiritual significance to members of the church, and is performed by worshippers moving in circles. The worshippers usually carry their crosses as they time and again switch from clockwise to anticlockwise movements.

performance

A church member explained that during the performance of the siguco, members connect with the spirit, leading to some of them becoming possessed. A series of unusual performances usually take place when members are possessed by the spirit, and these may range from rolling on the ground to ‘head-butting’ anything within reach, while others take to whipping fellow worshippers or making some utterances or noises.

slamming

Mndvoti narrated it was during such spirited moments when he accidentally injured his spinal cord after slamming his head repeatedly against his church door. Even though he does not recall the ‘head-butting’ incident, Mndvoti said fellow worshippers related the chronology of the events in hospital, where he was admitted a day after the incident.

He mentioned that the incident happened at night.
“I only remember joining fellow worshippers in the ring to perform the wheel dance (siguco) after we were all invited to join in. That is as far as I can recall, anything else that happened thereafter eludes my memory.

“Our church usually held night services every Friday and it was during one of these gatherings when I got injured,” he explained.
He said he later learnt that he collapsed after hitting the door with his head. He recalled that members told him he remained unconscious for the better part of the night, and all that time they thought he was just sleeping.
