HLATIKULU – Police officers are investigating one of their own, following the suspicious murder of a nurse who was based in Hlatikhulu Health Centre.

According to the police, the nurse was found unresponsive in her rented flat situated in New Town, which is one of the residential areas of the small town. Her lifeless body was found wrapped in a towel along the passage on Thursday afternoon.

Her police boyfriend Sibusiso Shongwe, whose force number is 7632, held the rank of constable is alleged to be the last person to have who entered and exited her house, according to neighbours. Making the shocking discovery were police officers who reacted swiftly after the woman’s family members reported her missing.

Apparently, the family was expecting the woman home on Tuesday for the Christmas holidays but when she failed to turn up even on Christmas Day they became anxious and started making enquiries from her colleagues at work, who were equally baffled.

A plan was made to get spare keys to the house which was thereafter used to gain entry, leading to the shocking discovery.
Police officers who opened the house found the woman sprawled on the floor, with only a towel covering her unresponsive body.

struggle

Initial investigation showed there had been a struggle before the woman met her death.
Residents immediately became suspicious of her police officer boyfriend who had been seen around on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The same police officer was also allegedly seen driving around Hlatikulu on Thursday morning before the shocking discovery.

Noteworthy is that the officer, who is based in Hlatikhulu, had been away for a while since he was said to be undergoing training at the Matsapha Police Academy. However, a neighbour recalled seeing him around the woman’s rented flat, both on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the nurse was last seen on Tuesday.

Neighbours had all along thought that she was not home, especially because even her car was not in the yard.
Information gathered was that the boyfriend had made contact with traffic officers who had mounted a roadblock at the time when he left the small town on Thursday. It is understood that some of the officers asked about his girlfriend’s whereabouts and he allegedly told them she was inside the car which he had parked a distance away. At that moment there was nothing suspicious because the family had not yet reported anything.

Everybody became anxious after the family started to enquire about the woman’s whereabouts later on the same day.
Police officers were roped in, leading to the discovery of her body. It later transpired during police investigation that a bit of commotion was heard by a neighbour coming from the nurse’s rented flat on Tuesday night, but the resident decided not to pay much attention.

Wanted

Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Nosipho Mnguni confirmed the incident. “Yes sadly a nurse that was dating a police officer lost her life and we are currently investigating the matter. The police officer in question joined the force between the years 2014-15 and he is wanted for questioning as we speak,” said Mnguni.

She added that the officer was supposed to report at a police workshop during the days of the incident but did not. “When we realised that he was not at the workshop and also not on duty at the station we then started our search for him,” added Mnguni .

The officer is said to be driving a light blue sedan registered YSD 460 BH. The car registration has been circulated in all police stations around the country as he is wanted for questioning. The public has been urged to dial the police emergency number 999 should they have any information.
