MBABANE – While cracking your fireworks at midnight, do spare a thought for the man’s best friend.

This is the message from the Swaziland Animal Welfare Society (SAWS) and the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS).
Speaking on behalf of SAWS, an officer who identified himself as Simon, said it was a known fact that firecrackers had a negative effect on dogs.

He pleaded with members of the public to keep their celebrations to a minimal as the animals were petrified by the loud sudden noises which normally came with firecrackers during the celebration of a new year. “We would like to plead with dog owners to come and find shelter with us for the night if they have nowhere safe and comforting for the pets,” Simon said.
He said in most instances, the dogs tend to run away because of the loud sounds citing that canines had a more acute sense of hearing than other animals.

Simon further said should animals disappear from their homes, the public should not hesitate to come and look for them at SAWS because some good Samaritans always brought the animals to them for safety.
Meanwhile, Inspector Nosipho Mnguni, who is the Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer, also asked members of the public not to play too close to dogs once they started setting off their fireworks. She said the dogs were very vulnerable during such instances.

On another note, Mnguni said parents and guardians should be vigilant and supervise children when setting off the firecrackers. “We are well aware as it has been the norm that people will be celebrating the crossover by popping all sorts of fireworks, but we plead with them to exercise extra caution,” said Mnguni.

The police mouthpiece further said members of the public should also not go overboard with the celebrations. She said there was nothing wrong with the fireworks displays, but that they should not last too long after midnight. “Let us be considerate of our neighbours and not have fireworks still being set-off even at 2am,” she said.
