MBABANE – A boy who had started misbehaving, with his parents seeing that his future was going in the wrong direction and decided to enrol him at Vulamasango High School, is one of the country’s top performers.

Mzwandile Mthethwa got a 90 per cent aggregate in his Junior Certificate results, making him one of the best performers in the country. According to Mthethwa, he studied hard to get a Merit pass but he did not expect to be one of the best in the country. The 17-year-old boy arrived at the school in 2017, after his parents saw that he was mixing with wrong friends at home, which would lead him to commit criminal acts. Mthethwa said he would not be leaving the school until he finishes his high school education, as he appreciates what his parents did for him.

“I would not have obtained this mark if I was out there. I am still shocked even now that I passed this well. When I look at where I come from, the life I was living before I got to Vulamasango, I am happy I was brought here,” he said. The pupil admitted that he was inspired by a motivational speech made by one man who visited their school. This man told them to study three hours in a day and should start studying the hard subjects and end with the easy ones and he did just that. Mthethwa stated that he wanted to be a scientist when he completed his studies as his favourite subject was Science.

“Science was the hardest subject during the exams as it was tricky but I did my best,” he said. According to Mthethwa, one of their teachers promised that the pupil who would appear on the front page of the newspaper for being one of the best would get E500. Mthethwa admitted that he had accomplished this and he was expecting the money. He then advised his peers, who were going the wrong path, similar to the one he took two years ago, to concentrate on their studies and forget about drugs. Vulamasango obtained a 100 per cent pass rate with no failures and no Third Class passes and the school was number 10 in the country. Head teacher of the school Dan Mavuso stated that he was speechless, with his school obtaining a 100 per cent pass rate.
