PUPIL BRUTALLY WHIPPED FOR FAILING TEST
ESITJENI – It is said that sparing the rod spoils the child, but what happens when a teacher goes overboard?
For 13-year-old *Sibusiso, who is a Grade VII pupil at Sitjeni Primary School, this has resulted in him wanting to change schools.
This follows what has been described as severe corporal punishment at the hands of one of his teachers last Friday.
Despite the Ministry of Education and Training clearly stating without stammering that corporal punishment was abolished in local schools, a teacher at the aforementioned school allegedly whipped Sibusiso, leaving him with bruises on his buttocks.
Narrating the incident, Sibusiso, in the presence of his grandmother and aunt, said he was beaten for failing a test.
He narrated the dramatic encounter, stating that he was first allegedly dragged on the ground by the teacher after he tried to evade the punishment. He alleged that he had tried to escape from the teacher and hide behind one of his other teachers but that did not help. He alleged that he was dragged by his arm on the muddy ground for a distance of about three metres, and taken into one of the classes where he was instructed to lie on a table.
beaten
Sibusiso alleged that he was beaten with a thick and long stick which was covered in tape. He recalled being given about six strokes by his teacher whom he said first threatened him.
Sibusiso alleged that before being beaten, the teacher first said, “Utibasele umlilo longeke uwucishe. Ngifuna kukushaya ngatsi ngifraya licandza.”
Sibusiso narrated that on the previous day, the teacher came into their classroom with their test papers in one hand and a bundle of sticks in the other.
He alleged that the teacher said he would beat all those who had failed the test and upon discovering that he was one of those who would be at the receiving end of the stick, he went out of the class as if he was going to the toilet. He said instead of going to the toilet, he went home and returned on the next day.
