POLICE BUDGET NOT CUT
MATSAPHA – Are police the holy cows of the economy? The question arises following revelation that when other ministries were ordered to sacrifice several expenditure during the crafting of the fiscal budget, the police budget was not touched.
This was revealed by Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini when addressing police officers during a familiarisation tour of the Matsapha Police Academy.
Dlamini promised the police that government would look into their various challenges and address them, so that they could execute their duties without hindrances.
The PM said one of the passionate pleas he had encountered when touring police stations in the country was the acute shortage of housing. “While in Nhlangano, one officer even said to me that police cannot play love games anymore because they share houses,” he said, to the laughter of the gallery.
The PM promised that police housing was one of the priorities his ministry would deal with.
Constable Sandile Dludlu, who spoke on behalf of the police officers also appealed to the PM to buy uniform for officers as the ones they wore were now worn-out and portrayed a bad picture of the police officers.
One of the items in the Budget Speech delivered by Finance Minister Neal Rijkenberg was the allocation of E30 million for the construction of Buhleni Police Station.
The police are also currently rolling out their Corporate Development Strategy for 2015 – 2020, which includes effective service delivery, heightened safety and security, and policing through the adoption of science and information technology.
Meanwhile, Bishop Bongani Mbingo from Mhlane Royal Kraal decried the state of the economy that the prime minister had inherited. “Ufike lubisi seluphelile, lucedvwe bokati labebakhona itolo,” he said, meaning ‘when you came into office you found that there was no longer milk because it was consumed by cats that were here before you’.
He said he was pleased that His Majesty had appointed a Prime Minister who was God-fearing.
