HLANE – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has suggested that there should be a cultural festival where SADC countries would come together and celebrate their cultures.

He was speaking during the closing ceremony of the marula ceremony at Hlane Royal Residence on Sunday.
Ramaphosa was on a ‘working visit’ but then took time to watch the last day of ceremony.

In his address, he said he was impressed by the traditional dances of the Lutsango regiment.
“We are happy to be among you to see how you dance. Your Majesty, you asked us to come and see how beautiful emaSwati follow culture and we saw that you’re indeed people of culture,” Ramaphosa said.

invite

After experiencing the marula ceremony, Ramaphosa stated that it would be good to invite the Lutsango regiment to South Africa, so they could show South Africans how they do it.
“I would like that one day, there be a day whereby the different SADC countries would come together and dance. It should not be a competition. But as SADC countries, we need to come together and show each other how we follow culture,” Ramaphosa said to a loud applause.

He stated that he was aware that the King of the Venda, Thabele Masia, had attended the main event of the ceremony on Saturday.
“I’m not quite sure if he is still around or he has left. But I hope he saw how emaSwati danced and he learnt something from the experience,” Ramaphosa said.
He appreciated Eswatini culture, stating that though there were emaSwati who resided in South Africa, those from Eswatini were ‘the most beautiful’.

appreciated

Meanwhile, His Majesty the King appreciated the presence of Ramaphosa, further stating that he was the first sitting president to attend the annual marula ceremony.
The King said Ramaphosa was so impressed by the dance moves displayed by the Lutsango regiment such that he wanted to enter the arena and dance.

“However, I cautioned him that in our culture, men are not allowed to dance with Lutsango. We only sit, watch and dance in our hearts,” His Majesty said, sending the audience into stitches.
The second leg of the ceremony began on Friday evening when throngs of Lutsango regiment delivered fruits, marula brew (buganu) and other gifts to Her Majesty the Indlovukazi.
