HLUTI – A teenager has been arrested for allegedly killing another man after the pair traded insults following a marula drinking spree.

The victim was stabbed about 12 times around the chest area, after allegedly calling his 19-year-old attacker names while he was walking home from a local drinking joint in the company of a female companion.
The horrifying incident happened at Siphambanweni, in the outskirts of Hluti, on Saturday night.

Siphamandla Dlamini (19) was picked up from his homestead around Mgamudze on Sunday morning and taken away to the Hluti Police Station, where he was subsequently charged with the murder of a local resident, Bhuti Madlala the previous night.
During interrogation, the young man recalled that on Saturday, the day started out pretty much like every other, where he did his household chores before he set out to drink marula brew with friends.

Investigators heard that the suspected killer had been with friends, hopping from one drinking hole to another during the day, where they enjoyed the potent brew.

At the last drinking place, he revealed that he met a girl with whom he also enjoyed the brew with. He had been in the company of a friend but at around 7pm, they went their separate ways and he decided to leave with the new female companion.
He said it was already dark when he picked up a fight with another person he came across along the way, just before he reached the turn to Nsalitje at Siphambanweni.
This was allegedly after the man started insulting him without any provocation.

The teenager told the investigators that he perceived this as an affront to his own dignity and confronted the person, who was unknown to him.
During that skirmish, the young lad recalled that he found himself pulling out a knife without warning and allegedly stabbed the stranger several times in his upper chest. He said he really couldn’t process what was happening and everything just happened so fast.

“I didn’t know what I had done to provoke this person but he simply hurled insults at me,” narrated the teenager.

Terrible

The teenager said he was trying to make sense of the whole terrible event when one of his friends came to the scene and tried to restrain him.
However, it turned out it was a little too late as the victim was already lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
He said the man just lay there lifeless, with no sign of breath and this frightened him.

Thereafter, he disclosed that he threw away the knife before leaving the scene with the friend.
On the following morning, the boy said he was preparing to go back to the scene of the murder when he heard that police had been to his homestead looking for him. Suddenly, a police van approached his homestead and he was eventually arrested.
He was detained at the Hluti Police Station, before making an appearance at the Nhlangano Magistrates Court, where it is understood he also confessed to committing the crime.
The suspect is currently held in custody pending his committal to the High Court.

This is not an isolated case of violence which has been linked to the in-season marula brew. Just recently, a man who was employed as a herdsman reportedly killed his wife after the couple picked up a fight following a drinking session, where they had been imbibing on the traditional brew.
He has also been arrested by the police.
