MAHWALALA- “Why did he do this?” This is the question that lingers on the minds of the community members of Hilltop after the burial of Sebenele Gama. She was laid to rest yesterday at Mahwalala Cemetery.

The funeral started off in the morning with a brief service at Mbabane Burial Society at 6:15am. It then proceeded to the cemetery, where a short service was held before she was put to her final resting place.

Missing

Sebenele is one of the two Grade VI 14-year-old girls who went missing on March 2 after they were last seen in the company of Colani Sihlongonyane, a gardener in the neighbourhood. The bodies were discovered last Thursday by community members of Masamketini following a search which lasted for almost a day.

Her decomposed body was found half-naked under a bed in Sihlongonyane’s one-room stick and mud flat. Her underwear was reportedly around her knees and her T-shirt was lifted up to her chest, exposing her breasts.

The body of the young girl was found with a slash wound on the head and this resulted in the community members and police inferring that a sharp object might have been used to end her life after she had been allegedly raped.

Grief has engulfed the school, community members, friends and relatives of the late Sebenele, in the manner in which the young girl’s life was taken. Mourners were beset with gloom and a wave of disheartenment hung around them as the corpse was lowered down into the ground.

One community member who identified herself as a community leader expressed their sadness at the way the young girl passed on. She mentioned that she had served in the community for some time and lived in the area for 25 years.

Prayed

However, the community leader stated that she had not observed such an act of violence before.
The woman pointed out that they were disheartened as a community and prayed that whoever committed the deed would soon be apprehended.
She further stated that once the culprit was found, the question they would want to ask was the motive behind the gruesome killing.

The leader stated that it was in their prayers that the evil which had encompassed the community would never happen again.
Tears and groans of moaning formed part of the funeral as teachers, friends and relatives cried uncontrollably during the funeral service of Sebenele.

Her grandmother, who had fainted, was taken away from the crowd who had assembled around Sebenele’s grave to send her off. She was moved and placed on the field to get some fresh air.
