ANOTHER CHALLENGED CHILD UNDER LOCK, KEY
MANZINI – While many parents openly gloat about their children, a certain woman has resorted to locking her grandchild because he is physically challenged.
This is the sad story of a minor who is always locked inside a house at Mhlaleni in Manzini due to the fact that he has a disability.
It has hardly been two weeks since this publication reported about a girl who was kept in a shack because of her disability.
*Sakhile (12) is a boy who has a disability in that he has his feet wrinkled across each other and therefore cannot walk or talk.
He is also mentally disturbed.
When this reporter paid the home a visit, the boy was found locked in the house.
His grandmother, *Alice stated that the young man was afraid of people, and as a result, she decided to lock him inside the house to protect him.
“He screams every time he sees people, so I decided to lock him in the house to protect him,” she said.
However, information gathered from a reliable source was that the grandmother claimed that other children were afraid of her grandson, and that they referred to him as an ‘animal’, and that was the reason why she locked him inside the house.
Excitement
When this reporter went inside the house where the child was locked in, the boy portrayed an attitude of excitement, an element that indicated the fact that he was yearning to socialise with people and that he had been deprived of such privilege.
The boy’s grandmother admitted that he did not mingle with other children as he was always locked in the house and that he was born with the disability. As a result, he had never been to school.
She also highlighted that both his parents were still alive but that they broke up, which was why the boy lived with her.
She further narrated that she sold fat cakes for a living, a scenario that made it hard for her to cater adequately for the boy’s welfare.
Grant
She also revealed that the boy did not receive the disability grant which she claimed was due to his parent’s procrastination to apply for it.
The grandmother said she would be delighted if the boy could be taken to one of the schools that catered for persons with disabilities.
She also urged the nation to come to the rescue of the boy by donating food parcels and clothes as she was a vendor who could barely make ends meet. She said anyone willing to help can contact her on the number 7653 9167.
