BUSINESSWOMAN ACCUSED OF SELLING LAND TO ASIAN
MPOLONJENI – Traditional authorities of Mpolonjeni in Siteki have opened a case against a businesswoman suspected of selling a piece of land to an Asian businessman.
The traditional authorities have further opened a case of crimean injurie against the same woman, accusing her of hurling insults at chiefdom messengers. Charges had already been preferred against the woman and she had already been subpoenaed to appear before Siteki National Court on Tuesday. However, the matter couldn’t proceed because the businesswoman had indicated that she would be represented by an attorney. As such, the matter was struck off the roll of the Siteki National Court but could be referred to the Magistrates Court, sources close to investigating officers said.
Meanwhile, last Saturday there was drama at the businesswoman’s home when inner council members, together with senior members of the ruling Dvuba clan, visited the disputed land. The land is situated right within the premises of the businesswoman’s home, along the Lukhula/Big Bend road. Senior members of the Dvuba clan allegedly tried to have audience with the businesswoman but she reportedly refused. Children of the businesswoman reportedly exchanged heated words with members of the inner council who were protesting against being photographed. Senior Prince, Petros Dvuba, explained that they had gone to assess the land and see for themselves the fence that the businesswoman had erected around the perimeters of the disputed land. “The umphakatsi has repeatedly warned this woman not to utilise the land but she has ignored the warnings,” Dvuba alleged yesterday.

He added that traditional authorities had reliably gathered that the businesswoman had allegedly sold the land to a prominent businessman based in Siteki, who is of Asian origin. “They have partnered with this Asian (businessman) and it seems like she has been advised to erect fence around the area before selling the place,” Dvuba alleged. However, the businesswoman disputed this. She told this reporter that she had erected fence around the place so to prevent people from walking across her homestead boundaries. “That piece of land is within my boundaries. Even some members of the inner council know this. I have not sold the land nor am I planning to do so,” the businesswoman stated.
