ZONDWAKO – A 10-year-old child died tragically after she was hacked with an axe at the back of her neck, allegedly by her mother’s ex-boyfriend. Silindelwa Zwane became a lamb of sacrifice, following her mother’s refusal to make up with her ex-lover, Musa Dlamini.

Her body was discovered by police and community members after Dlamini allegedly disclosed to a relative that he had killed Silindelwa and dumped her body along the Lusutfu River in Bhunya, about two kilometres from her mother’s parental homestead.

Narrating the events as they unfolded, Philile Msibi, who is the mother of the child, alleged that her former lover attacked them at around 8pm on Saturday.
Msibi alleged that she was in the presence of her elder sister and children when the incident happened. She said they were getting ready to lock the main door, when Dlamini threw himself inside the house and allegedly started threatening her.

She said while they were still exchanging heated words, she tried warning the children to keep safe and Dlamini allegedly charged towards her, carrying a pistol and an axe.

Overpowered

According to Msibi, her screams woke up her elder sister who was already in bed in another bedroom. “My sister woke up and wrestled with him. She overpowered him and I got a chance to escape through another bedroom window, where I had locked the children, including Silindelwa,” Msibi said.
However, she said when she jumped off through the window, in a bid to escape, her child followed her. “My daughter was unlucky as she was grabbed by Dlamini the moment she was screaming outside, trying to follow me,” she narrated.

Msibi said she went straight to the road where she tried to stop an oncoming car which nearly hit her.
She said when she was by the roadside, she saw her former lover holding her daughter’s hand, going with her down the fields.
However, Msibi said the car did not stop and she tried going to her ex-boyfriend’s homestead where there was a traditional wedding (bayeni) taking place, to report the matter. “I went to the Dlamini homestead as most residents were celebrating there and thought they could help me get my child back,” related Msibi.
She said the residents assisted her by calling Bhunya police who arrived at around 11pm. Msibi said a search for her missing daughter began but lasted for a short while after they failed to locate Dlamini and the child. “We slept but early in the morning, I called the police and they did not arrive,” she said.
Fighting
Her elder sister, Londiwe, also reiterated Msibi’s recollection of events. She said she tried hard fighting with Dlamini but he managed to run off from the house.
She said this was the moment he got the chance to catch the little girl. “It was already dark and he had disturbed the switch lights in the sitting room,” said Londiwe.
An 18-year-old relative of Dlamini is reported to have come across him on a pathway along the mountains not far from the homestead yesterday.
The relative narrated that Dlamini was carrying a rope and an axe and reportedly told him that he was going to commit suicide by ingesting a weevil tablet.
He also reportedly told him that he had killed Silindelwa and had dumped her body in the bushes along the bushes at Lusutfu River.
The relative then informed relatives who called Bhunya police.
Indeed, the body of Silindelwa was found facing down with a gaping wound on the back of the neck.
Worth noting is that Silindelwa was to turn 10 years yesterday and died a few hours shy of her birthday.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter. She said Dlamini was still on the run and police would continue searching for him today.
