MBABANE - “The legal fraternity is under ‘attack’.” These were some the sentiments shared by a number of attorneys after learning of the death of lawyer Bongani Lucky Dube.

Bongani is the fourth lawyer to die in a space of three months following the death of President of the Law Society of Swaziland (LSS) Mandla Mkhwanazi, Leo Gama and Bhekisisa Zwane.

He will be remembered for his deep and captivating voice and as someone who was free-spirited. Dube, who was a people’s person, was not only a lawyer but he was also a socialite as he was popular in the Manzini- Mbabane corridor.
Bongani (33) succumbed to a severe headache while undergoing treatment at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital (RFM) in Manzini on Friday at around 10pm.

Narrating circumstances leading to the death of his son, Bheki Dube, who is soldier based at Nkoyoyo, stated that on Friday morning, he received a message that Bongani was complaining of a severe headache. He said in a bid to subdue the pain, his son took Panado tablets.
He said at that time his son was preparing to go to Manzini to attend a work-related meeting.

According to the father, Bongani requested his brother Sicelo to drive him to Manzini as he had not fully recovered from the headache.

Drive

In an interview yesterday, Sicelo stated that Bongani called him on Friday and told him he was not feeling well and requested him to drive him to Manzini where he was to attend the meeting.
“I then drove him to certain offices around Manzini whereupon arrival he alighted from the car and entered the building, leaving me behind,” said Sicelo.

After about 20 minutes, Sicelo said he saw his brother coming out of the building supported by two people on both sides and he was sweating.  Sicelo said those who had attended the meeting with his brother tried to pray for him but the situation did not improve.
“I called some of his brothers and we drove him home whereupon arrival he showed signs of improvement such that he went to see his friend who is also neighbour,” Sicelo said.

He said his brother specifically asked that he be taken home first before going to hospital as he wanted to inform his father about his sickness.
He narrated that upon return from his friend after a few minutes, Bongani went to inform his father, who by that time was at home, that he was not feeling well.
