MBABANE – He was a loved person. This could possibly sum up the reactions following the news of the demise of Phumelela Shongwe. Crowds of people have flooded the Shongwe homestead to mourn his death.

Following the sudden death of the Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) general manager on Saturday, multitudes of mourners were already assembled at his home at Checkers to convey their condolences yesterday.

A large number of cars were found already parked at the Shongwe homestead yesterday afternoon. Most of the mourners were ushered into the house where they expressed their sympathy to Shongwe’s wife and other family members.

When this reporter arrived at the homestead, she was warmly welcomed by a family member, who referred her to the family patriarch, Senzo Maphanga, who is one of the elders in the family. According to Maphanga the mourners had started arriving since the day they received the sad news of Shongwe’s passing.

Support

He mentioned that they had been receiving immeasurable support from family members and friends through the influx of phone calls and visits since the day of his passing. Shongwe was involved in a tragic accident on Saturday in the neighbouring South Africa (SA).

Reports were that he was involved in an accident while travelling with two other colleagues who survived the accident. They had landed at Oliver Tambo International Airport from Mauritius where they then boarded a car and were headed back home.

Maphanga said the death of his son had shocked the family.
“We are saddened by his death because it was unexpected. He had gone on a work meeting and naturally we expected him to be back safe and sound, so we are still shocked,” said Maphanga.

He further narrated that he got a message from the late general manager’s wife (daughter-in-law), who informed him about the tragic accident. He mentioned that Shongwe would be remembered for his humble spirit and his enthusiasm towards life.
