CALL TO REDUCE FOOD, FUEL PRICES

NHLANGANO – Government’s failure to approve workers’ proposed cost-of-living adjustment (CoLA) has left hordes of workers stressed and struggling.

Many are now unable to buy groceries, according to workers’ federation TUCOSWA, which has suggested that government should reduce food and fuel prices with retailers in order to save the situation.

In a bid to have their suggestion taken seriously, the workers under the banner of the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA), are planning a march to put pressure on government to force retailers to negotiate reasonable prices for several commodities.

President of the federation Quinton Dlamini said this was the only way government could help them out of the misery created by its failure to increase the earnings of its employees.
Explaining the reasoning behind the proposed idea, Dlamini said the salaries of government employees had an impact over how the private sector eventually pays its workers as well.

He said due to government’s failure to increase its workforce earnings, workers in the private sector were also feeling the brunt. Dlamini noted that many private companies haven’t been raising their workers’ salaries of late, because they use government as their point of reference.
