LOBAMBA – Long queues at the Revenue offices could be a thing of the past as the Ministry of Finance is considering opening these as early as 8am.

This was confirmed by the Accountant General (AG) Dumisile Ngwenya yesterday during the appearance of the ministry before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Currently, the revenue offices start operating at 8:30am and there are usually long winding queues as early as 7am.

Operating

Chairperson of the PAC and Matsanjeni North MP Phila Buthelezi, had initially requested the ministry to consider operating until 4pm instead of the 3:30pm, which is when the offices currently close.

Ngwenya said the ministry had already been considering opening early, especially because of the imminent transition of the offices to the Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA).

The AG said they would not consider closing at 4pm because the officers had to carry out their duties of distributing stock or material in order to round up the collections made during the day.

She said they opened at 8:30am because for the first 30 minutes of the morning, the accountants or officers also had to make several transactions before they started operating.

She said however, they were considering opening at 8am, so that they could service more members of the public.
She, however, did not give a specific time frame on when the new arrangement would be implemented even though MP Buthelezi had specifically asked for a time frame.

Meanwhile, the PAC members complained of the ill-treatment members of the public received from some of the officers at Revenue offices.
Manzini Region MP Busisiwe Mavimbela said the ministry needed to teach the staff on customer care, because they were very rude to the public and further did not clearly explain what was required of them.
