MBABANE – A suspected thief has lost his life in the hands of a mob at popular hangout spot, Solani’s Shisanyama.
The victim had robbed a customer of his jacket, which had money, near the drinking spot and fled the scene.

Information gathered from the patrons who witnessed the incident was that the suspected thief, Njabulo ‘Sduvane’ Nkambule, was attacked by the mob after he was seen snatching the jacket from the customer, believed to be a South African national.

It is said the jacket had money amounting to E5 000 in one of the pockets.

Foreign

The customer is one of the many who had visited the country over the weekend. He was driving in a foreign-registered car, hence the strong belief that he was from South Africa.
When confronted, it is said that Nkambule took to his heels and ran towards Mgababa, which is a tiny populated location downhill from the hangout spot.
Some members of the mob ran after him and managed to catch  him before he could hide.

He was caught a few metres from his place of abode.
Residents who were disturbed by the noise are said to have tried to rescue Nkambule, however, it was too late as the mob allegedly took him back to the scene (Solani’s) where he had snatched the jacket earlier.

 Sjambok

Upon arrival at the scene, it is alleged that that mob assaulted Nkambule with a sjambok, kicks and fists.
What is suspected to have ended Nkambule’s life is a gas cylinder, which he was assaulted with on the head.
He is suspected to have died on the spot.

The incident is said to have happened in the morning hours of yesterday.
During a visit to the hangout spot at around 8am yesterday, about four police vehicles were parked outside the premises, supposedly gathering information and evidence following the incident.

There were also some motor vehicles with foreign-registration plates, which were parked outside the premises.
Plain-clothes police officers were seen moving in and out of the secured Solani’s premises.

The officers of the law were from different departments, which included Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Scenes of Crime, Serious Crime Unit (Lukhozi) and the Anti-Drug Unit.

A driver of one of the foreign- registered cars drove off, leaving officers at the scene.
It appeared that at the time, the corpse had already been taken to the mortuary.
About six people were seen boarding one of the police vehicles and information gathered was to the effect that they were to assist the police with their investigations relating to the murder.

Guards

Among the people who boarded the police van were Solani’s Shisanyama employees, security guards and some residents.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed a report of a murder, which took place at Msunduza in Mbabane.

Vilakati also confirmed that there were people who were assisting the police with investigations.
She said four of the people who assisted with the investigations were later arrested and charged with murder.

The quartet is expected to appear in court today.
Also, unconfirmed reports are to the effect that the police also made attempts to trace the owner of the jacket to also assist the law enforcers in their investigations.
However, it was later reported the customer had already left the kingdom back to his home country.
