MBABANE – “What is happening to our beloved city?” This is the question that many parents residing in the capital city failed to get answers to following the spate of murders of teenage girls within Mahwalala, a location in the outskirts of Mbabane.

The parents conceded that for the longest time, Mbabane was known for trivial and petty crimes but not where the lives of young girls were in danger.
“This is disturbing really. We have always thought these crimes were rife in other parts of the country, not Mbabane.

Could we have a serial rapist and murderer on the loose? Why is he targeting young girls who have a bright future ahead of them? Our hope is with the police to get to the bottom of this. We can’t live in a society engulfed by fear,” some of the parents who called this publication said.

At least three female parents called this publication to voice out their frustration on the non-apprehension of the suspect(s).

Moving

“What if it’s one person who will be moving on to the next location? We can’t live like this. The police should act fast,” one parent said.
In light of the recent crimes, security has been beefed –up at Mahwalala following the murder of yet another teenage girl on Friday.

The Form I pupil of Saim Christian High School is said to have been suffocated and raped while in a rented flat in the area.
The death of the pupil brings the number of killed pupils to three, following the killing of two others about three months ago. Both children aged 13 years, who were pupils at Nkwalini Primary School, were also raped and murdered around the same location.

Residents raised their concerns during a community meeting which was held at Saim Christian High School yesterday, adding that  the killings were putting the area in bad light.
Chairperson of the Mahwalala Committee, Thandi Mkhonta, sought responses from the residents, adding that they needed to come up with a solution.

Responding, the residents said it all started with the parents who were allowing their children to roam around the street in the thick of the night. Another concerned resident said he had met up with three teenagers during the weekend, walking along the same area where the pupil was killed.

“It was two boys and a girl,” he said. The resident said he immediately stopped to find out what the teenagers were doing at the awkward time of the night and he was told they were from practice.
