ANGRY PARENTS LOCK UP SCHOOL

PIGG’S PEAK – It is the duty of every parent to ensure that their children’s hygiene is a priority.

With this message, parents of Ntsinini Primary School pupils forced the school to close for the day because of lack of water and electricity.
Ntsinini Primary School is situated under Mhlangatane in northern Hhohho.

Yesterday, parents first started off with a meeting at the school where they discussed some of their concerns.
Among these was that the environment was not conducive for their children because there was no available water at the school.
They also wondered how the teachers were able to work without water at their quarters. “How do they expect them to bath?” asked parents.
The school uses a borehole for water.

Since the school had run out of electricity units, this meant that the borehole’s pump could not be operated.
The school’s electricity units are said to have been recently depleted but due to lack of funds, they could not purchase them.
This is said to have angered parents, who demanded to convene a meeting.

meeting

The meeting was held yesterday and it ended in parents ordering the children to return home until further notice. “We locked up the classes and the school gate,” said a parent.

*Dumo said the other concern with the school was that the parents had not been furnished with an audited report of the school’s finances.
He said the parents were also not happy that the head teacher was unavailable.

They alleged that he had not been seen at the school and that this was one of the reasons they ended up locking up the school gates.
The parents also said they wanted to be addressed by the regional education officer (REO).

Dumo further said the school would continue to remain locked until their demands were met. “Even today, the children will not be at school,” he said.
The REO, Thulie Langwenya, did not answer her cellphone when called yesterday.

The deputy REO referred questions to the REO, adding that he was only informed that the concerned parties had gone to the latter.
