KOMBI DRIVER RAPES, IMPREGNATES GIRL (14)

NHLANGANO – A 14-year-old girl is expecting a baby after she was offered a lift home from school by a kombi driver, who then raped her.

The disturbing incident took place around February, but only came to light recently after the Grade VI pupil was discovered to be pregnant.
She told her parents that she was waiting for transport to ferry her to Nhlangano from Mahamba, when a familiar kombi driver, Sandile Ngwenya, who usually dropped off some pupils at her school, pulled up. The young girl mentioned that she became suspicious when she noticed that the kombi had no passengers aboard.

She said when she asked the driver if he was travelling to Nhlangano, he responded to the affirmative. She recalled that he allayed her fears by saying he was intending to get customers along the way, so she got in.

However, when they had covered a short distance, she said the driver took a detour to a certain homestead where he pretended to be picking up something.
Once at the homestead, the driver alighted and got into a house, where he later came out with a brown box. He then opened for the girl and asked her to help him get the box inside.

But she said things took a different twist when she bent down to pick the box.

She disclosed that the man suddenly grabbed her and instructed her to get inside the house. When she refused, he reportedly turned aggressive and used one of his hands to cover her mouth to prevent her from making noise.

The young girl later told investigators that she wanted to flee from the man but he overpowered her and had a firm grip on her before throwing her onto the floor once they reached the house.
He then undressed the helpless minor before he proceeded to rape her.

The young girl narrated that once he was done with whatever he was doing, he dressed up and instructed her to follow suit before they drove off.
But he later dropped the young girl off before she could reach her intended destination.

She kept quiet about the abuse until she fell ill while at school recently, about four months later. A teacher, who suspected that the girl might have conceived. suggested that she talk to her parents to take her to the clinic. She later confided to her parents about her ordeal in the hands of the kombi driver, whom she identified by name.

A case of sexual assault was reported to the police after a doctor confirmed the girl was pregnant.
This led to the arrest of the culprit on Tuesday.
