MANZINI - A man and his daughter almost lost their lives after they were knocked down by a kombi that was racing for customers.
The accident happened near KaNdlunganye at around 7am on Monday.

Sibonginkhosi Dube (35) and his daughter Bobo (7) were severely injured after a reckless kombi driver knocked them down while rushing for customers with one of his counterparts.

According to Sibonginkhosi, on the day of the accident, he was walking with his daughter who was going to school while he had to rush to work.
Dube highlighted that it was a custom for him and his daughter to walk together every morning, as he would drop her off at school before proceeding to his workplace.

Behind

He said while walking past the KaNdlunganye off-ramp, a kombi came from behind.
He said the driver of the kombi was negotiating a way through, by overtaking another kombi that was in front of his, in a bid to rush for customers who were waiting for public transport at the KaNdlunganye station.

Dube mentioned that while intending to overtake his contender, the driver of the kombi that eventually knocked them down swerved from the road to the pavement where he and his daughter were walking and knocked them both down.
He said they were fortunate in that when the accident happened, there were traffic police officers nearby who promptly reported to the scene and ferried them to hospital.

He said their injuries were so severe such that they were unable to record a statement with the police on the day the accident occurred.

Statement

“Police only came yesterday to the hospital to record a statement because on the day the accident occurred, we were unconscious,” he said.
Dube’s daughter was said to have been badly injured more than her father, and had to be rushed to the Mbabane Government Hospital where she is currently recuperating.

Dube on the other hand was rushed to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the accident.
Vilakati, however, said they had no proof of the fact that the implicated driver was vying for customers with his counterpart when the accident occurred.
She mentioned, however, that the driver of the kombi that knocked down Dube and his daughter, was arrested in connection with the accident.
