TSHANENI – A family is devastated. This, after the head of the family accidentally knocked and killed his 17-month-old son with a car.

Police said the tragic accident happened at around 3pm on Sunday at Tshaneni, a small agricultural town located northeast of this country, near the border with South Africa. Particulars of the deceased, including his name, and that of the father were not immediately ascertained.

According to sources close to the police, the family was from church when the tragic accident occurred.
Upon reaching home, other members of the family reportedly disembarked from the vehicle and went inside the house.
They left behind the father who reportedly wanted to offload from the vehicle musical instruments which had been used at church, said the source.

Reversing

As the vehicle was reversing, the baby reportedly sneaked out of the house unnoticed and excitedly stood at the rear of the car, apparently in readiness to welcome his father.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the vehicle reversed into the minor.

Mirrors

“The father could not see the toddler from the mirrors because he (baby) was standing right at the back of the bakkie and not on the side.
The vehicle hit the baby with impact on the head, causing very serious injuries,” said the source.
There was reportedly a loud bang the moment the vehicle knocked down the baby and, according to sources, the father instantly stopped the vehicle and rushed to check what he had bumped.

He was reportedly shattered to find his son sprawling on the ground in agony with severe head injuries, sources said.
The toddler was immediately rushed to the private Mhlume Clinic for medical attention but he was certified dead on arrival, said sources close to the police.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the sad incident. She wouldn’t say if the father would face culpable homicide charges but she said investigations were continuing.

The father of the baby could not be reached for comment at the time of compiling this report yesterday afternoon.
However, it was gathered that he is aged 37 years and that he works for a giant sugar manufacturing company.
The family is reportedly traumatised following this tragic and shocking incident.
