ESWATINI CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL SAFE ABORTION DAY
EZULWINI - It’s one story to celebrate a milestone you have walked and another to rejoice about one where you never got to journey.
This seems to be the story behind the country joining the world in commemorating the International Safe Abortion Day, which takes place on September 28 annually, when in fact abortion is not legal in the country. The celebration hosted by Safaids and Genderlinks was held in Ezulwini yesterday and it also saw a roundtable discussion on issues around legalising abortion in the country. Present in the discussions were representatives from CANGO, Safaids, Genderlinks, Khulisa Umntfwana, Church forum, Parliament and Sam champions youth mentors.
Ncane Maziya, who is the Genderlinks Eswatini Country Manager, said the collaboration was meant to amplify and increase national and regional advocacy towards removal of policy restrictions to access safe and legal abortions in all SADC member States, through hosting simultaneous roundtable meetings in 15 SADC countries, in line with the vision of the ‘My Choice: Our Choice’ Regional Campaign on Ending Unsafe Abortion in the SADC region. Maziya added that the roundtable meeting also generated a regional SADC civil society organisations’ position on the Global Gag Rule (Mexico City Policy). They made it clear that they were against it.
The rule prohibits foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who receive United States of America (USA) global health assistance from providing legal abortion services or referrals, while also barring advocacy for abortion law reform even if it’s done with the NGO’s own, non-USA funds. The policy allows access to abortion only in cases of rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is at risk. Meanwhile, Mandisa Zwane-Machakata, the Country Representative of Safaid,s said they were for the idea of safe legal abortion because there were a lot of back-street abortions that were conducted, which led to deaths and other permanent complications.

She went on to state that this came after they had a number of cases reported to them by people who were not able to access post abortion services from some of the health facilities.
