POLICE DEPLOYED IN SCHOOLS, BUT...
MBABANE – Police will be deployed in schools in order to man the external examinations.
This comes after the police claimed they received information on a mass meeting that was convened by the public sector associations (PSAs) on September 27, 2019 where among the resolutions that were taken, was that the errant conduct of disrupting classes at schools would continue. External examinations commenced at schools around the country yesterday and police were doing regular check-ups to ensure that no disturbance was encountered during the exams.
The decision to have police providing security at schools was announced by Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) National Commissioner William Dlamini during a press briefing at the Mbabane Police Headquarters yesterday. Dlamini stated, however, that police would not be taking the full responsibility of safeguarding the examination papers and invigilating as was the case last year but they employed a different approach, which would also ensure that there was no sabotage to the writing of the external examinations at schools.
Deployed
Around the same time last year, armed police officers were deployed across the 830 public schools in the country to make sure exams ran smoothly during a teachers’ pay dispute. This was said to be means to thwart any chaos that could have taken place. Between three and six members of the REPS were deployed in each school. In addition, His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) delegated two officers per school. Each officer was provided with two meals daily and a number of vehicles were leased by the Ministry of Education and Training for the purposes of ferrying the security personnel to and from the schools.
It was reported, at the time, that head teachers in schools around the country, particularly in the Lubombo Region, had to calm pupils and allay any fears when armed police officers arrived for the commencement of examinations. The national commissioner said the police were aware of the resolutions which were allegedly taken by the PSAs during the mass meeting, including a decision to shut down the city of Manzini tomorrow.
