IS THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTRY NECESSARY?

LOBAMBA – For Members of Parliament (MPs), the country does not need the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

This, according to the MPs, is because a bigger chunk of the country’s budget is used by the ministry but there are no benefits. The MPs made this submission at the House of Assembly yesterday during the adoption of the Report of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)’s Recommendations on the Auditor General’s Report on government accounts for the financial years ended on March 31, 2017 and March 31, 2018. Lobamba Lomdzala MP Marwick Khumalo referred to what was happening at the ministry as ‘umhlolo’.

“I recently asked myself as why we need this ministry in this country, especially because its budget can actually accommodate over four ministries yet it does nothing. What is this ministry for? I do not understand,” Khumalo submitted. PAC Chairman Phila Buthelezi was in agreement with the MPs as he admitted that money was overspent at the ministry. In vernacular he said, “Foreign Affairs ngulakudliwa khona timali, kuyatatjwa”.
