EASTERS: ‘TEST CHRISTIANS AT SOMHLOLO’
LOBAMBA – There is a need to check believers who will attend Easter services at Somhlolo for the coronavirus.
This was a submission made by Senator Chief Mvimbi Matse during the Ministry of Health’s annual performance report for the current financial year. It took place at the House of Assembly yesterday.
The sitting became slightly different and took a turn as senators seemingly chose to discuss the flu-like virus instead of the contents contained in the ministry’s annual report.
Senator Matse first questioned Minister Lizzie Nkosi on the ministry’s preventive measures to combat the spread of coronavirus among believers who travelled into the country during the upcoming Easter services. He also queried what the ministry would do to ensure that dagga dealers and those using informal crossings did not contract the virus or let alone infect emaSwati.
“We are soon approaching Easter services and I implore the ministry to see to it that Christians should get tested before they enter the Somhlolo National Stadium,” the senator requested.
He said this would help detect infected persons and further prevent the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, Senator Prince Hlangabeza expressed his dissatisfaction with the ministry’s officials’ sitting arrangement in the August House. He expressed that the ministry should be exemplary in setting the tone when executing the precautionary measures.
Surprised
“I was expecting to see each one of you sitting a distance away from each other but I am surprised that you are sitting next to each other as if nothing is going on,” the senator said, much to the laughter of the portfolio committee members.
Before long, Senator Chief Mvimbi Matse was seen slightly moving away from next to the prince.
The prince further requested the minister to define the virus and said this while exhibiting a sombre mood. The senator also shared that he was appalled when he learned that the doctor who first discovered the virus died of it. The senator stated that it was disheartening when even health practitioners died due to the coronavirus and declared it as a serious health risk. He warned the ministry to do all it could to guard against the nation from contracting the virus.
Senator Prince Magudvulela declared his support for the ministry’s supplementary budget to address the virus. The senator stated that he blessed the ministry to even spend money on advertisements, if it had to, to inform emaSwati on the preventative measures. He further stated that the onus was now upon emaSwati to take instruction from the ministry about the virus. He said every liSwati should do everything the ministry instructed to ensure their safety.
Senator Chief Ndzameya Nhlabatsi queried if there were other treatment methods the country had for coronavirus. He enquired, “We have been hearing the ministry preaching about the washing of hands but aren’t there other ways to combat the illness”?
Senator Chief Ngalokhulu Mabuza likened the virus to a Bible scripture in John 10 verse 10, where it is written that the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. However, he gave caution that the ministry should not only fix its focus on the flu-like virus but also be mindful of other illnesses and matters that affected it.
