MBABA NE – Pupils and teachers at Mpofu High School were treated to some drama as a Form V pupil allegedly slapped a teacher in broad daylight.

The incident happened on Monday.

It is alleged that the bone of contention, according to sources who were present when the incident happened, was a laptop which was given to the teacher by the pupil to fix.

According to the source, the exchange of the laptop happened while schools were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is alleged that the teacher fixed the laptop, but the pupil was not satisfied with it yet he had to pay for the service. Sources claimed that the teacher approached the pupil on the issue of the payment not being made in and an argument ensued.

It was then that, according to the source, the pupil slapped the male teacher with an open hand several times while on the school premises near the reception area.

The teacher is said to have reported the matter to the head teacher, who called a meeting where the pupil’s parents were in attendance.

The meeting was held on Tuesday.

The sources claimed that the pupil was suspended by the head teacher after the meeting.

Internally

When the teacher was called for a comment, he declined to comment, stating that the matter was being dealt with internally.

When the Head teacher, Jerome Msweli, was contacted, he confirmed knowledge of the matter.  According to Msweli, the incident happened at the reception area in the presence of the school’s secretary.

He said the narration he got was that the pupil did not pay for the laptop after it was fixed and the teacher kept reminding him of the debt whenever they met.

On the fateful day, the teacher is said to have reminded the pupil about the debt when he met him at the reception area but in response, the scholar allegedly slapped him.

“The secretary told the teacher not to fight back but report the matter to me, which is what he did,” narrated Msweli.

The head teacher confirmed sending the boy home to call his parents and that the meeting was held on Tuesday.

He said the parents sided with the pupil, which was when he requested that they leave with him while he (head teacher) reported the matter to the regional education office (REO), so as to get a way forward from it.

Hhohho REO Thuli LaNgwenya could not be reached for comment as her phone rang unanswered when contacted.
