MBABANE – Former Speaker and Ngwempisi Member of Parliament, Mgabhi Dlamini and his family are reportedly shell-shocked.

This follows that they were visited by senior police officers, who linked the former legislator, who is currently bedridden, with a visit to the Prime Minister, Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini’s property, situated at Mpolonjeni in the Lubombo region, by journalists from this publication. The officers said they had information that Mgabhi was the one who travelled with two reporters from the Times of Eswatini and a sibling of a deceased senior member of the royal family and went to the PM’s property, where pictures were taken. Two family members belonging to Mgabhi’s household confirmed the visit by the senior officers, who have been identified as Assistant Commissioner Elvis Shabangu, the Lubombo regional operations officer – and one, Inspector Nkonde, also from the Lubombo region.

“The senior officers said it was him (Mgabhi) who travelled with reporters and showed them the prime minister’s property. “They said they, therefore, wanted to know what the intention of taking pictures of the PM’s property was,” one of the close family members said. Strangely, they didn’t tell him what the journalists had said in relation to the matter or whether they had confirmed to the police that they had indeed travelled with him to the PM’s property. “The regional operations officer said he had been sent by the national commissioner, who had been instructed by Ludzidzini authorities. It is surprising, therefore, that the journalists have not been engaged on the issue,” said the family member. The member said they had believed that the police officers had engaged the Times journalists first, before visiting the family, but just did not want to disclose to them the people they had engaged with.

According to the family member, the police officers visited Mgabhi’s home on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. This was a week after the Times SUNDAY had published a picture of the PM’s property alongside a story of a bodyguard of the prime minister, who had been involved in a government vehicle abuse scandal. The family member said the senior officers had promised to return but they had not done so. “They said they got the information from a resident of Mpolonjeni, but it is strange that they never asked the journalists why they had travelled with Mgabhi to the prime minister’s property,” the family member stated. Another family member said the visit by the police officers and the accompanying accusations had greatly traumatised the already-fragile Mgabhi.
