MANZINI – Security measures were put to the test on Sunday night at SWAGAA offices following a break-in.

SWAGAA stands for the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when thugs broke into the offices and stole items valued at over E200 000. The items included electronic gadgets and stationery belonging to the non-governmental organisation (NGO).

According to Zakithi Hlophe, who was the first employee to arrive at the SWAGAA offices on Monday morning, she immediately noticed that something was amiss.

She narrated that upon her arrival; she noticed that the burglar door was unlocked and the padlock was missing. She recalled how shocking it was to enter the office and find all the doors wide open.

She said the shock emanated from that the doors had been locked at knock-off time last Friday.

After calling her employer, she was advised to not touch anything but immediately call the police.

Some of the items that were stolen from one of the offices included four cameras, projectors, new laptops and other electronic gadgets. The total value of the items stolen amounted to E210 000.

The thugs are said to have forcefully gained entry through a back door, which had visible marks, indicating that it was forcefully opened.

SWAGAA Executive Director Nonhlanhla Dlamini confirmed the break-in, stating that the organisation suffered a huge loss because a majority of the stolen items were newly-purchased, and had never been used by the staff.

She further appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information regarding suspicious people selling the items.

Laptops

“Some of the items were still in their boxes, such as the cameras, laptops and tablets. We are appealing to the nation to assist us in finding these items, as they are vital to the work we do in the organisation,” she said.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the break-in.

She said the matter was still under investigation as no arrests had been made at this time.
