CABULA CHURCH CELEBRATES EASTER WITH BOOZE
PIGG’S PEAK – Jesus’s words during his last supper with His disciples have become the focus for a group calling themselves, ‘Cabula Church’.
The church, which is situated around Mbasheni near Matsamo, made the most of the words Jesus said to his disciples during his last supper. According to the Bible, Jesus passed a cup with wine which was shared among his disciples. He then told them to remember him as often as they drank the wine. However, Cabula Church members strictly follow this part of the Bible, though they claim they could not pass one cup or glass of wine around for the congregants to drink from, to avoid spreading COVID-19. Instead, each member drinks from his own large cup. There is no limit on the amount of buganu that each congregant can have.
Structures
Also, the members do not use large structures to worship as they said even Jesus sometimes shared the scripture from under a tree. Just like Jesus gathered with his followers, on Saturday, members of the church gathered to celebrate Easter. In the centre of their gathering was a container of 25 litres of buganu, which was being consumed by the members. Only men sit on chairs, while women use mats. There was only one woman present during the service last Saturday. Shickshop Dlamini, who is the self-proclaimed pastor of the church, said alcohol played a very important role during their services. “Jesu watsi phuzani kuze ningikhumbule,” Dlamini said, meaning that Jesus said his followers should drink in his remembrance. He warned that the church was not a drinking club. Dlamini first emphasised that the church did not collect offering because he did not want to end up misusing the collections. He said it was for this reason that they still gathered under a tree.
“We do not have the money to splash on a church building,” he said. He said during Easter, it was important to follow exactly the instructions left behind by Jesus. He said according to the Bible, Jesus commanded his disciples to drink the wine which symbolised his blood. Dlamini said in the book of 1 Corinthians 11:25, the Bible noted Jesus’s last supper with his disciples, in which he reminded them that whenever they drank the wine, they should do it to remember him. He said, in the same manner, he gathered with some of the members of his church to remember Jesus.
