POPE CALLS FOR DIALOGUE
MBABANE - At the conclusion of the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis turned his thoughts to Eswatini.
Vatican News reported on Sunday afternoon that Pope Francis recalled news of unrest and violence being reported and called on those in authority and aspiring for the future of their country to work together for ‘dialogue, reconciliation and a peaceful settlement’ to their differences. Sunday Angelus is a Roman Catholic prayer service where the Pope speaks from his window overlooking St. Peter’s Square. It is held during noon on the Sunday. Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.
Meanwhile, local Christian bodies had also called for the inclusive dialogue where they were in one accord that they were ready to mediate. In statements released by the Council of Swaziland Churches and the Conference of Churches, the Christian bodies said dialogue would be the best way of reaching a solution to the political unrest that is currently faced by the Kingdom of Eswatini. Council of Swaziland Churches Chairperson Bhekindlela Magongo and General Secretary Zwanini Shabalala pleaded with everyone to bury the hatchet and come to the negotiation table for a negotiated solution to the problems. The duo said no one party had a monopoly of wisdom to solve the problems but different minds and views could give a better solution. They said government should be willing to meaningfully engage with those who have or hold a different view. In their statement, the Conference of Churches leadership encouraged the nation to peacefully submit their petitions in a non-violent manner.
