TEACHER’S 11-ROOM HOUSE BURNS, FAMILY LEFT HOMELESS

PIGG’S PEAK – A family of four has been left without a home after a fire engulfed their place of abode and destroyed everything.

Bongiwe Sukati, the owner of the house, is a teacher at a nearby school around Mhlangatane at a place known as Ndwabangeni. She was still in shock yesterday when she was called for comment. Sukati said she was not sure what caused the fire but said it started in the morning while she was at her school. She said she had left the house with her children. Sukati said there was no electricity at the time when they left as there was no power in the area. She said while she was at school in the morning, she was informed about the burning house and noticed the smoke. Some of the residents managed to push a vehicle away from the garage, but the house had already been engulfed in flames.

Destroyed

Sukati said everything in the house, including items belonging to her children, were destroyed. “We only remained with the items that we had on us,” she said. She said the house had 11 rooms and a double garage and that the items were valued at hundreds of thousands. She said she was too traumatised to calculate the value of the whole house and the items that were destroyed. Sukati further said even memories were destroyed and that this had left her and her children traumatised. She revealed that the family would be going for counselling. She also revealed that she had temporarily returned to Manzini, which is her home area. The area’s bucopho, Tsitsibala Dlamini, described the incident as an unfortunate one. Dlamini said he had also visited the family to find out how they could be assisted. He revealed that some volunteers from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) were at the house to calculate the damage. Some residents were also left shocked at how fast the fire spread throughout the house.
