SHOWING LOVE ON FATHER’S DAY
MBABANE - As the world celebrated Father’s Day yesterday, Vuyiso Dlamini became the centre of attraction when he was seen carrying his child in a baby carrier.
Dlamini, who is originally from Zimbabwe was seen around Corner Plaza, Ezulwini carrying his son in a baby carrier on his front, something that is not common with African men.
Most African men hardly carry their children in baby carriers. Dlamini was also carrying a feeding cup. He was playing with his son as he walked to his house situated around the area. Members of the public, especially women, were filled with admiration while some asked what happened to Dlamini.
In an interview, Dlamini stated that the child was a boy and that he was a twin. Asked what motivated him to carry his son, Dlamini said to him, it was a shared responsibility, however, not to say his wife had excuses. He said he felt it good to help as his wife had other commitments, including studying. “You see, I am working Monday to Friday, so I have to help my wife on weekends so that at the end of the day it becomes a successful home. I have no problem in taking any of my boys. Actually, I was with the other one in the morning,” he said. Dlamini was also carrying a feeding cup and would sometimes feed his son during the course of the interview.
Asked if it was a common practice for men to carry children in baby carriers unaccompanied in Zimbabwe, Dlamini said the society was the same but the world was changing. He said it was no longer a shame for men to carry their children in baby carriers in public. A man who saw Dlamini’s picture said; “I only do this at home and I cannot do it in public.” Children world over commemorated Father’s Day. Sometime last year, Pastor Bakhe Dlamini attracted reactions on social media after he was seen carrying his child in a baby carrier. Also Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku once encouraged men to be supportive to their wives. Masuku demonstrated his support for his wife by cooking.
