DAUGHTER ATTEMPTS SUICIDE AFTER FAMILY BLAMES HER

SITEKI – The lawyer’s daughter, who was eventually taken to a safe house, said her family blamed her for having sexual intercourse with her father and she attempted suicide several times.

*Mimi said her ordeal began when she was 14 years old and at the time she had no relationship with her father. She said he had visited her grandmother, with whom she was staying and when she brought him breakfast, he asked her to hug him and held her tight. She informed the police that her father requested her to visit him in town where he stayed. Mimi, who is now 19 years old, stated that she and her father left in the evening in his car and she sat in the backseat, because she basically had no relationship with him.

Along the way, he allegedly stopped the car and asked her to sit next to him. She alleged that he took off his jersey and placed her hand on his stomach and asked her to brush it.  “I froze and he said I should relax,” she said. Mimi also informed the police that when they arrived at his house in town, where she had never been, he showed her to her room but later called her to his bedroom to sleep there. Mimi said she woke up and found her father on top of her, touching her all over the body and had sexual intercourse with her. “I was bleeding and went to the bathroom and cried,” she said. On the same night, she said, her father took her to a different part of the house where her sister and other relatives resided. She said one of her sisters asked her what had happened to her and she told her that her father had sexually abused her.

Her sister told her that she had also been raped by their father. Mimi further informed the police that in 2017, her father went to stay at his parental homestead and continued to sexually abuse her on several occasions. She said she did not tell anyone about her ordeal because the first time she did so, they did not take action against her father. Mimi said one evening, her aunt, who was said to have advised another child not to resist having sex with the lawyer so that he would give them food, sent her to take her father’s food to his house and when she came back, she found that the door was locked and nobody opened it for her when she knocked.

Forced

According to Mimi, she was forced to go to her father’s house to sleep there. She alleged that everyone else was blaming her for having sex with her father ‘as if it was my fault’.
She said she told her uncle’s wife and grandmother that her father was having sex with her and she no longer wanted to stay at the homestead. The minor told the police that she was taken to Swatini Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA), where she was interviewed and underwent counselling, and her uncle’s wife reported the matter to the police, who recorded statements.  She alleged that her father told her that she would no longer stay at his homestead because she had reported him to the police.

School

“My father said I must tell the police that I had slept with a boy from school,” she said. She went to the police station and told the officers that her father did not have sex with her.
However, in 2019, she alleged, the lawyer started having sex with her again on several occasions. She said she fell pregnant in 2020 and told her brother that she had been impregnated by her father. The lawyer allegedly called her and gave her abortion pills. Mimi mentioned that she ingested the tablets. She revealed to the police that she buried the foetus behind a pit latrine. Mimi said she dug out the foetus and placed it where the family threw away nappies, hoping that someone would notice it, but that never happened. Her uncle referred her to a social worker and she was removed from the family to a safe house.
