MBABANE – Members of Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) last Wednesday reportedly shot dead two suspects who were attempting to smuggle two stolen vehicles into the country.

According to sources close to the matter, the incident happened at Dwalile area in the afternoon. The sources said soldiers who were patrolling the area noticed the two vehicles, a white and an inferno metallic Toyota GD6 double cabs, and tried to stop them, but the drivers attempted to escape.
The insider narrated that the soldiers fired warning shots but the drivers did not stop. The sources said it was then that the soldiers fired straight at the vehicles and shot the drivers, who died on the spot while some passengers who were on board fled.

The white car had two visible holes on the driver’s side and those were believed to be a result of the gunshots. The cars were suspected to have been stolen from the Republic of South Africa. They both had South African registration numbers. When sought for comment, UEDF Public Affairs Officer 2nd Lieutenant Tengetile Khumalo could only confirm receipt of two controlled Toyota GD6 double cab vehicles, which were handed over to the pertinent law enforcement agency. When asked about the suspects, Khumalo said she would have to wait for a fully detailed report from the battalion in charge of the operational area for further information.

The army has been very handful in controlling criminal activities that usually happen along the borderlines. In the army’s first quarter report that was tabled in Parliament in the past weeks, the UEDF reported to have controlled several forms of crimes, ranging from drug smuggling, livestock rustling, illegal firearms and illegal crossings. In the report, the army reported to have controlled dagga valued at E1 298 000 over a period of three months. The army said 61 arrests were made for this crime. The army also reported 98 952 informal crossings in the period under review. These crossings included 44 047 entries and 54 905 exists.
