MAN KNOCKS DOWN PEDESTRIAN WHILE TEST-DRIVING CAR
MANZINI - A man who was test driving a car, which he was about to pay E83 000 for, lost control of it and knocked down a pedestrian before ramming into a parked vehicle.
The accident happened during the lunch-hour yesterday near the National Agricultural Management Board (NAMBoard) offices in Manzini. According to a source close to the matter, the man, who was accompanied by a woman, came to Rahil Swaziland Investments, a car dealership opposite Christian Media Centre, looking for a car to buy. He said after viewing about three cars, the man chose a Mazda Demio, which was selling for E83 000. The source said the man requested to test-drive the car before paying for it. He said the man had promised to pay for the car in full after test-driving it.
Garage
According to the source, when they left the garage, one of the directors of the car dealership, Mustuf Yunus, was driving the car, and the man and his companion were passengers. He said when they were around Makhosini Flats, the potential buyer asked to test-drive the car, and he he then occupied the driver’s seat, while Yunus joined the woman as a passenger. This was confirmed by Yunus, who said when they were passing the Family Life Association of Eswatini (FLAS) and Philani Clinic, the car was speeding and he asked the man to slow down as they were approaching a sharp corner. “In response, the driver told me that he knows how to drive,” Yunus claimed.
Negotiate
He alleged that the man tried to negotiate the corner, but failed as the car went off the road and knocked down a pedestrian on the pavement. The potential buyer alleged that the car’s braking system malfunctioned. When this publication arrived at the scene, it found that the pedestrian had already been rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident. She said a car which was driven by a 27-year-old man knocked down a pedestrian and further bumped into another car. She said the pedestrian sustained serious injuries and the police were investigating the matter.
