MANZINI - A man suspected to have been involved in slain cop Thulani Mthembu’s shooting was killed on the same night of the shooting.

This was revealed by the suspect who is believed to have killed a 21-year-old man of Ntabamhloshana, who was found lying dead with stab wounds on his back outside Mbalenhle Christian Academy School on Saturday night. The suspect appeared at the Manzini Magistrates Court for a confession yesterday. The killed cop, Mthembu, was assassinated at about 10pm on Friday, in front of his family members and friends, during a cleansing service after the death of his father, who was a deputy commissioner at the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS).

On the same night of the shooting incident, another man was stabbed to death and was found lying dead outside Mbalenhle Christian Academy School situated at Ngculwini. According to the suspect who is believed to have stabbed the man, he was suspected to have been involved in the shooting of the police officer and he was chased after by him together with three others until he was caught. The allegations narrated by the suspect are yet to be verified in the court of law. Narrating the events leading to the stabbing, the accused told the court that there was a cleansing ceremony at the Mthembu homestead. He said they were enjoying some alcoholic drinks at the homestead. According to the accused, it was at around 10pm when they heard gunshots being fired and the police officer was shot. He said three people were seen fleeing from the scene.

Gunmen

The accused narrated that he and three others chased after the suspected gunmen. While chasing after them, the accused told the court that they came across a white BMW driven by a man in the area. He said they asked him if he saw any people running away and the response was to the positive. The accused narrated that the man told them that they took off and travelled on a dirt road. He said they then went back to the Mthembu homestead and found that the deceased’s corpse had been removed. He went on to say they went back and chased after the unknown people. The accused alleged that they saw three people walking and when they were close to them, the trio started running away. The accused said they ran after the men and one of them was caught. He added that the men left the suspect with him, while they went on to chase after the others.

The accused further alleged that he asked this man some questions about the shooting, but he faced downwards and drew a bush knife which he struck him with close to his neck. In retaliation, the accused narrated that he then drew a knife and stabbed him. He further mentioned that he was joined by the others and he proceeded to chase after the other men who had escaped towards Mbalenhle Christian Academy. He said he caught him and stabbed him with a knife after they had an altercation. After this, he said he left the man and they went back to the Mthembu homestead on the same night.
