E10M SAFE – UNESWA REGISTRAR
MANZINI – “The money (E10 million) is safe, very safe and it has not been used,” says UNESWA Registrar Dr Salebona Simelane.
The registrar said this when responding to a questionnaire which was sent to him last week. In the questionnaire, the registrar was informed about the concerns which were raised by some stakeholders about the E10 million which was donated by South African businessman Patrice Motsepe (through the Motsepe Foundation) to UNESWA in 2018. The concern that was highlighted to the registrar was that stakeholders expressed that they had not seen and had not been updated on where the money was used, yet they were hoping that it would improve some of the services in the university, that would also benefit them. In response, the registrar said: “The money is safe, very safe and it is true that it has not been used. However, it is earmarked for the construction of new classrooms and a few offices at Kwaluseni Campus and Mbabane Campus.”
Investigation
Again, the registrar was informed that an investigation which was carried out by this publication suggested that students raised a suggestion that part of the donation should be used to add more accommodation in the campuses. However, Dr Simelane said the suggestion was good, but there was a different project that was aimed at addressing that need. Once more, the registrar was asked about the issue of the contract that was signed with Chakaza Holding Company, where the construction company was supposed to construct classrooms at Kwaluseni and Mbabane campuses, which was later cancelled for alleged unjustifiable reasons. “Yes, Chakaza Holding Company was involved at the initial stages of the project at Kwaluseni, but due some technical reasons, the work was stopped by council. The project is resuming soon,” the registrar said.
