PIGG’S PEAK – Thieves dared to steal green chert rocks that are being kept at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station.

Green chert also known as green stone, is found at Malolotja Game Reserve where illegal miners usually steal it with the aim of selling it in South Africa (SA). It is usually sold for as much as E30 per kilogramme. Some of the illegal miners end up being caught and the stone ends up at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station, as exhibits. The theft incident is said to have happened on Saturday evening. It was gathered that the thieves cut the fence of the police station and entered near the outside toilets. The thieves then headed for a courtyard where the police normally keep exhibits. Noteworthy, there is a gate and the place was locked at the time. However, the thieves opened the gate without breaking the lock.

Some impeccable sources revealed that it appeared the thieves had a key or they used a tool to open the  gate. After opening the locked gate, the thieves are said to have taken the rocks.  It is was gathered that they were picking the rocks and leaving them outside and then entered again to take more. However, some police officers are said to have noticed something unusual and realised that there was a break-in at the courtyard. Attempts to get the thieves to stop fleeing failed. This resulted in the police firing shots. However, this did not stop the thieves from running away and they managed to escape, but left about eight large green rocks.

Armed

Some of the sources said the thieves may have been armed and that there was also a vehicle waiting for them. No one was shot or arrested so far. Noteworthy, the incident happened at a time when Pigg’s Peak town centre, near where the police station is situated, was alive with activities due to the high number of bars. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that some people entered the courtyard. “They discovered that we have police officers who are very alert and they managed to stop them,” said Vilakati. She said nothing was stolen in the attempt by the thieves.
